From time to time people ask me how to accept credit cards online.
On the one hand, it’s fairly straightforward to accept Visa & MasterCard. You’ll need a merchant account for that.
On the other hand, the language is often confusing and there are a few different ways you can process credit cards online.
For retail, they use a credit card terminal to link your customer’s credit card with your merchant account.
But when you accept credit cards online, you need another way to make the link. And there are a few options available to you.
For example:
- Do you want to link to your website with “Add to Cart” buttons?
- Will you need recurring billing to automatically charge your customers each month?
- Would your prefer to own software?
- Is a secure “virtual terminal” the best option for you?
- Does your site need a SSL certificate?
- Is your desired system PCI compliant?
Online Merchant Accounts Simplified…
Rather than get bogged down by technical details, the best way to approach online merchant accounts is to focus on the needs of your business.
Start with HOW you want to accept credit cards.
Then work with an expert on finding the right solution for your needs.
To help you overcome the dizzying array of terms and “tech speak” that most providers use (and assume we know what they are talking about), here are a few definitions to help you get started…
- Gateway = The online connection between your website and/or virtual terminal and your merchant account.
- Virtual Terminal =Using software on your PC or by logging into a secure website to process credit cards.
- SSL Certificate = Secure socket layer. Required if you use a shopping cart to link with your gateway to maintain credit card transaction security.
- Merchant Account = Required to process credit cards.
- Automatic Recurring Billing = A system for charging your customer’s credit cards automatically based on a day of the month, or set interval (i.e. 30 days, 60 days, etc.)
- Authorize.net = One of a number of “gateway” providers.
- Shopping Cart = A software or virtual system to upload and manage your products.
Along with understanding these terms, you will need to have all of these “moving parts” working together to ensure that you are processing credit cards in a safe and effective manner.
I hope this short article clarified a few issues for you.
