The first point makes a lot of sense. Since you need to transmit sensitive credit card information, you need to make sure that your customers card number is being sent securely.

You might assume that just about any device will work for you. However, I’ve heard feedback from a number of people who signed up for mobile credit card processing, only to find out that many times they couldn’t get a signal at their customer’s location.

If you install satellite dishes in rural areas, for example, this might become a problem.

You can still process payments, but will have to swipe your customer’s card “offline.” Then once you are in cell phone range you can transmit the data.

However, please be aware that accepting cards “offline” will not protect you from a customer using a bad card, since there is no way to authorize a transaction until you get back online.

If they do offer you any free equipment programs, ask to make sure that:

1. you are getting new (vs. refurbished) equipment
2. that there are no “strings attached” to their free program

Finally, before signing on the dotted line it’s worth asking about any contract terms or early termination fees. It doesn’t make sense to sign up with someone if it will costs hundreds of dollars to get out of a bad contract.
