Accepting credit cards for your business is a bit more complicated than you might think. Especially when it comes to the rates and fees you’ll need to pay for your merchant account.

Merchant Account Rates Explained

With that in mind, I’ll discuss the major factors that will affect what your overall merchant account rates and fees.

And with more than four (4) years in the business (running my own business) please understand that I’ve seen just about all the myths and ripoffs out there.  Okay?

So what is the biggest myth?  The “what is my rate?” myth.  Because…

there is more than processing rate
for accepting credit cards

Here are the factors that affect your overall rate:

  1. how you accept credit cards
  2. how you processed the card (swiped the card, keyed in the card numbers, using a virtual terminal)
  3. the card type (rewards card, corporate card, etc.)
  4. your merchant account pricing structure (how they structure the fee schedules when you sign up)

How you accept credit cards:  this involves whether your customers pay you face to face, over the phone or online.

How you process the card: now, even if your customers pay you in person (face to face), it might happen that from time to time you’ll key in their credit card numbers instead of swiping the card.  And every time you key in those numbers you pay more than the “swipe” rate.

The card type:  did you ever wonder how credit card companies pay for all those rewards (cash back, mileage, etc.).  Well, in part the card holder pays with a higher interest rate.  And you pay.  Corporate cards, reward cards, visa check cards all have a different processing rate.

Your merchant account pricing structure:  yes, there is more than one rate.  And more than one way to structure your account.  Those price structures are generally 2 tier, 3 tier, 4 tier and interchange plus.

So is there more than one rate?

YES.

And anyone telling you any different is either an untrained sales rep desperately trying to make quota by signing you up… or someone who knows the difference and is lying to you to get you to sign up.
