The Truth About Free Merchant Accounts

In searching the internet there are LOTS of sites promoting free merchant accounts.  But the question you have to ask yourself is this:

What do those merchant account providers mean when they talk about…

Free Merchant Accounts?

accept credit cardsI guess the question that comes to mind is, what exactly do they mean by free?

For instance, there IS a cost to accept credit cards at your business.  The rates (called “interchange” rates) are set by Visa and MasterCard.

For a boring and overly technical discussion of interchange fees, you can follow the link to this article at Wikipedia.

Clearly, then, it’s not free to process transactions at your business.

So then I started thinking of some of the more common merchant account set up fees that lots of merchant account providers charge people just to get the process started.

You know, things like:

  1. Application fees
  2. Set up fees
  3. Program fees
  4. Gateway set up fees

Now, I couldn’t compile a complete list of all possible set up fees, since banks seem to come up with new and creative ways to make money for basically doing nothing for you.

What you can do, however, is download a list of critical items to consider before signing up for a new merchant account.  Some of the items on the list are those fees you should avoid paying to get the process started.

And in my book that means free.

Now that we’ve covered merchant account set up fees, we can turn our attention to…

Free Credit Card Terminals

Lots of merchant account providers will try to get you to sign a credit card terminal lease.  Regardless of the company you choose for your next merchant account, avoid signing up for a credit card terminal lease.

A few companies may offer you a free credit card terminal when you sign up for a new account.

That’s certainly qualifies for a free merchant account.
